Wrapping Up Christmas! December 29, 2025

Filed under: Family Time,Tasty Treats — Amy Scott @ 11:34 am

Last week, we were kicking off all of our Christmas celebrations and this week is the wrap-up to all of that holiday cheer! I love that our family celebrates Christmas over many days. We even keep celebrating after Christmas. We keep the Christmas joy going as long as we can. Christmas is truly a season and not just a day!

In the week since I last posted, we’ve had so many Christmas adventures. Last Monday, we watched The Muppet’s Christmas Carol. It’s a Christmas classic! We got Starbucks treats and drove around to look at Christmas lights. Tuesday, the boys had their first ever piano recital. Nana prepared a wonderful evening to highlight the boys and their piano skills. It was a great night to celebrate both the students and their teacher! We so appreciate all the hours that Nana has given to teaching our boys. It’s been a joy to watch them grow in their love and appreciation of music. They put in lots of practice for this recital and it paid off. We are so proud of them for being brave and working hard.

Wednesday was Christmas Eve and our family celebrated all day long! We started the day with cinnamon rolls. After breakfast, the boys opened their Christmas gifts and we took pictures in our matching pajama pants. We enjoyed a festive turkey lunch before heading to church for a candlelight Christmas gathering. Nana and Aunt Patty were part of the a chime choir that played before the gathering. We got there early to cheer them on! Our evening was spent watching White Christmas and playing Graham’s new game – Liar’s Uno!

Christmas morning started with the boys opening their stockings. We packed up and hit the road for GG’s house. We got there a little early so we could chat with GG before the masses created Christmas chaos. My extended family has grown quite large and it makes for a wild time! I love watching the kids open their gifts and connecting with family we don’t see often. When things started to wind down at GG’s house, we took off for Nana and Papa’s house. We played a new game called Camel Up. It’s a camel racing/betting game. It cracks up that were playing Liar’s Uno and betting on camels over Christmas. What life skills are passing on to the next generation?! We enjoyed a tasty dinner and one more card game before heading home to wrap up our Advent season. We lit the Jesus candle and once again reminded ourselves that the best gift of Christmas is Jesus. Christmas means nothing if the Savior isn’t at the heart of our celebration.

We have a tradition of shopping in Portland the day after Christmas. The boys focused on Rubik’s cubes and Pokémon cards. I purchased a pretty copy of The Tenet of Windfell Hall at Barnes & Noble. Jeremy selected a new board game, Everdell Farshore, for our collection. The highlights of the day were birding at the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge early in the morning and lunch at the Cheesecake Factory with special desserts to share.

Now our main focus is learning all our new Christmas games. The boys got so many games this year! I’ve been playing Tetris with our game storage to find homes for all these new additions to our collection. We’ve enjoyed quite a bit of family time around the table. We had friends over yesterday and learned some of their new Christmas games well. We have plans with friends and family this week and I’m sure more games will be learned and played! It’s been a lovely Christmas season and we are thankful for so much as reflect on 2025. We look forward to savoring the last few moments of this year before we welcome 2026! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Scotts!

Kicking Off Christmas! December 22, 2025

We’ve had a quiet December so far… Or quiet-ish… Quiet for Graham and I… After the Christmas musical, Graham came down with a second round of whatever bug is going around. I also had what we called “Graham Lite” – similar bug, but a lighter version. It made for a lot of home time. Recovery was a top priority so our family Christmas plans could happen. Thankfully, all the resting paid off and we were able to celebrate Christmas all weekend long! We had back to back Christmas celebrations this week. Saturday was my family and Sunday was Jeremy’s family. The kids are now on Christmas break from school and enjoying extra time to play with their new gifts. We are in a slight lull of Christmas activity, but more Christmas cheer is still yet to come. Hopefully, I’ll be back with more to share soon! Merry Christmas!

Advent Week Three: JOY!
Wild weather here in the PNW! One week is was flooding and the next a powerful wind storm. Our canopy was ripped off our deck, thrown onto the roof, and then crashed right outside Owen’s window! Thankfully, it didn’t hit the window. Jeremy was out dragging it away from the house at 1:00am.
Cutting it close! Finished all the Christmas shopping and wrapping right before our Christmas celebrations!

The Carol of the Toys December 9, 2025

Filed under: Amy's Bookshelf,Children's Ministry,Family Time,Tasty Treats — Amy Scott @ 2:43 pm

This last weekend was a big one for our family! Let’s jump right in!

Friday, I hosted my book club. It had been months since our schedules allowed for us to meet. I was excited for us to gather again, especially for our Christmas party. It’s one of my favorite nights of the year! I’ve been experimenting a little with gluten-free baking. I adapted an easy pumpkin cake recipe using a GF yellow cake mix. It was tasty, but you could tell it was GF by the texture. I filled a crockpot with apple cider and spiced it was cinnamon sticks and cloves. So good! We nibbled on treats, talked about what books we’ve been reading, and then did a wrapped book gift exchange. In years past, we’ve done a white elephant style game were we draw numbers and steal. With a smaller group, I thought a dice game might prolong the fun. It worked quite nicely. While I hosted book club, the boys went to see Zootopia 2 which they greatly enjoyed – both the movie and the treats!

Saturday, Graham was under the weather so I stayed home with him while Jeremy and Owen went to church for the big Christmas musical dress rehearsal. It was finally the weekend to perform The Carol of the Toys! I was bummed that illness decided to hit our house the same weekend as the musical. Isn’t that how life goes? We didn’t miss a single practice until the dress rehearsal. Resting on Saturday was the right choice. Graham was well enough to participate on Sunday which was a huge relief to us all.

The Carol of the Toys is a bit like Toy Story. The toy room toys come to life and are excited to celebrate Christmas with their Christmas toy friends. Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus don’t arrive with the Christmas toys, so a search party is formed to go find them. Owen played Toy Solider, who leads the search party. The musical was silly and sweet while keeping the true meaning of Christmas at the center of it all. It’s not Christmas without Jesus! Owen did an awesome job with his lead role this year and Graham stepped up to the mic for the first time to be part of a quintet. I’m proud of them for stretching themselves and all the hard work they put into making the musical great! Now we rest! I’m thankful for a few quiet recovery days after the big weekend.

Book Club Treats: Gluten-free pumpkin spice cake and a crockpot full of spiced apple cider. Yum!

A Sweet Season December 3, 2025

Filed under: Family Time,Tasty Treats — Amy Scott @ 2:10 pm

It’s been a pretty sweet season around here! I laughed because I only took pictures of desserts for Thanksgiving! Otherwise, I was too caught up with the family time to remember to take photos. Honestly, I’m not great at capturing candid moments. I just set my phone aside and let the holidays unfold. We enjoyed two wonderful days of Thanksgiving meals with family. There is nothing quite like good food and times with loved ones. It’s a winning combination!

When we haven’t been eating, we’ve been playing board games. We invested in a new family game thanks to Black Friday savings. We bought Heat: Petal to the Metal. It’s been fun to learn a new game as a family. It’s similar to one Jeremy and I played in the past and enjoyed. The kids love the racing element. I’ve yet to win a game, but I’m happy to participate in a family activity. We’ve also played Yahtzee and Labyrinth in the last week as well. It’s so cozy on these dark winter evenings to gather around the table and play a board game together.

With Thanksgiving behind us, we dove right into some of our favorite Christmas traditions. We had our annual gingerbread house decorating day this last weekend. It’s a team effort. Everyone contributes to the final product. We aren’t professional decorators, but we have a great time! Owen requested a paper snowflake crafting session. We now have a blizzard of paper snowflakes decorating our living room. It adds another seasonal touch to our space. Sunday was the start of the Advent season. We have a new devotional this year that covers all the Sundays of Advent as well as a daily reading until Christmas. The kids have been eating daily chocolates from their Target Advent calendars. I love counting down to Christmas while keeping the true heart of the season in the forefront of our minds. These are some of my favorite days!

We added a new game to our collection: Heat! It’s been so fun to race this last week. I’ve yet to win, but I’m enjoying the experience. Ha!

Holly Jolly Hip Hooray! November 20, 2025

The title of my post is a line from our upcoming Christmas musical at church. We’ve been preparing for this production since September. I’m always a little ahead of the Christmas season thanks to kids choir. However, the season has finally caught up to the soundtrack of my life. Holly jolly hip hooray! Christmas time is here! Okay… I get that Thanksgiving hasn’t happened yet and there are strong feels by some about Christmas before Thanksgiving. I’m not one of those people, though. The stores and even the houses I drive by confirm this – the Christmas season has started! Hooray!

Reusable Red Cup Day at Starbucks was last Thursday. Jeremy was kind and picked up this year’s cups along with festive treats! He brought a snowman cookie home for Graham and a tray of cranberry bliss bars for me. He also got me a peppermint hot chocolate. Owen isn’t purposefully excluded… He just doesn’t like anything at Starbucks right now other than milk. Silly kid!

After we wrapped up school last Thursday, it was time to pack and get ready for another weekend away. We spent one November weekend at the beach and this last weekend was a kids leaders conference hosted by our Assemblies of God network. I’m not a huge fan to being gone two weekends in a row, but sometimes it happens. Thankfully, I’m done with packing suitcases for a while. The boys got a few days away with Nana and Papa. They always have a blast at their house. Jeremy and I enjoyed connecting with other kids leaders and hearing great content. We also loved plenty of kid-free time just being us! During our free time, we did some Christmas décor shopping, visited multiple Costcos, and ate at restaurants our kids wouldn’t like. Very fun times!

Sunday after church, we decked the halls and made the house merry and bright! Decorating for Christmas took a little more thought this year. With our new fireplace and an extra bookshelf, we had to add some new Christmas décor to fill in these spaces. I also had to rearrange a few items from their usual homes of years past. I love having our stockings hang on the fireplace. It might be a my favorite part of the house right now. I also love our advent candle wreath and I haven’t outgrown our Little People nativity set. It’s so cheerful to bring out these Christmas favorites with all the traditions they represent. It truly is the most wonderful time of the year!

Now, don’t worry! Thanksgiving has not been forgotten. Jeremy and I have had many conversations about what we’ll be making and taking to share next week. Jeremy’s aunt requested I bring sugar cookies to our Thanksgiving, so now I’m planning a few baking/decorating sessions next week. Jeremy is our family chef and he is covering the side dish offerings from our family. We are looking forward to celebrating with family and friends over good food! Bring on the turkey! Yum! We have so much to be thankful for this November!

Red Cups & King Tides November 12, 2025

I should briefly explain how I view Red Cup Day. Originally, Red Cup Day was the day that Starbucks debuted their holiday cups. They also added free reusable red cups to that day many years ago. Then they separated the dates between the holiday cup launch and the reusable red cup giveaway day. Now Starbucks refers to Red Cup Day as the day they give reusable cups away, but I still view it as the day they decorate the store and start using holiday cups. Essentially, I celebrate two Red Cup Days. The first, I make the most fuss over. The second, I send Jeremy as a my acquisitions agent. In the past, we got reusable cups for our whole family and were quickly overrun with too many plastic cups. Now we just collect one reusable cup a year. Much more manageable. Reusable Red Cup Day is tomorrow. My version of the real Red Cup Day happened last Thursday. Make sense? Great!

Last Thursday our family was up and out of the house early. I was excited to make it to Starbucks for my first red cup of the season. I save my favorite peppermint hot chocolates for only when red cups are in stock. It’s a seasonal treat I savor – along with cranberry bliss bars. YUM! Starbucks sees a lot of business from me in November and December (the rest of the year, not so much). I’ve celebrated Red Cup Day for over a decade. It’s a tradition! It’s a holiday! It’s a big deal! I’ve passed that legacy on to my kids as well. We enjoyed our seasonal treats together as a family as a start to our weekend away. Red Cup Day 2025 did not disappoint!

We postponed a trip to the Long Beach Peninsula to this last weekend. We tried to go in October for the cranberry harvest, but wild weather and sniffles changed our plans. Thursday was a blustery, stormy day at the beach. There were also king tides happening which made the ocean rough and wild! It was an intense and impressive sight to see those huge waves exploding along the coastal cliffs. We studied king tides (also known as spring tides) in science this year. It’s one thing to read about them, but it’s a whole other thing to experience them in real life. We kept a safe distance and we were in awe of the power of the ocean! We observed the tides from Cape Disappointment State Park and the Oysterville approach. It was so crazy to see no beach, just waves up to the sand dunes. Eventually, we left the wind and waves behind to hunker down at my parent’s beach house. We were all snuggly warm with books and games while the wind whipped around the house! Stormy beach days were a new experience for us!

Friday the storm cleared out, but the waves were still super high. The boys were able to get a beach walk in during low tide, though. After a morning walk, we visited the Cranberry Museum. We learned about the local cranberry businesses, how they harvest cranberries, and the many health benefits of cranberries. The boys did a scavenger hunt and each received a pouch of craisins as a prize for completing it. We walked around the cranberry bogs by the museum and we sampled many cranberry treats. I loved the cranberry ice cream and Jeremy loved the cranberry fruitlets from Liberty Orchards. Owen, Jeremy, and I tried plain cranberries at the insistence of the museum employee. We all agreed that cranberries on their own are super tart. They also make a really cool popping sound when you bite down on them. I didn’t know that! I love learning new things alongside my kids! We hope to catch the cranberry harvest in action next October.

We went back to Cape Disappointment State Park Friday afternoon. There is so much to do there! We watched the king tides from the North Head Lighthouse. We explored Fort Canby and did a scavenger hunt at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. The kids got bookmarks for completing it. It was a scavenger hunt day! We went back to down to our spot from the day before at Waikiki Beach. This was the best place to watch the king tides. Such a neat experience! It’s been fun finding things to do around the Long Beach Peninsula with each visit. We hope to go clamming on a future trip. The high tides didn’t work in our favor for clamming this time. We also hope to explore Fort Columbia. We are making a to-do list for next time!

We wrapped up our adventures with a Friday night swim at Dunes Bible Camp and a stop at Scoopers Ice Cream on our way out town on Saturday! We had plenty of to adventure time together and we also enjoyed a lot of cozy, down time around the beach house. It was a great mix of activity and rest. After the stormy beginning of trip, the weather changed to sunny and almost 60 degrees. It almost felt like summer! We had a fantastic trip and our family is looking forward to making more beach memories with future visits.

Halloween Happenings November 3, 2025

As I mentioned in my monthly book blog, the last weekend of October was a stormy one! We had already planned on a low-key weekend and the weather made me appreciated being hunkered down at home even more! To fully embrace the chill weekend, I wrote different “days” on the calendar. Friday was Turkey Day. We made a small turkey breast in our crockpot along with some traditional Thanksgiving fixings. I made a favorite pumpkin cake for dessert! Yum! Saturday was Cider Day. We simmered cider in the crockpot all day long. Sunday was Pumpkin Day (it was actually National Pumpkin Day according to my phone). We carved pumpkins as a family activity. To keep the crockpot theme going, I made chili and cornbread on Sunday. It was a good eats weekend! The wild fall weather paired well with the comfort food and cozy, restful moments! I loved all our travels and adventures in October, but I equally loved our weekend at home!

Other highlights to wrap up the month?

The kids both got parts in our Christmas musical. Owen is going to play one of the lead roles and he got the part he was hoping for. He was a pretty excited kid and we’ve already been diligently practicing. He has a month to memorize all his lines! Eek! Graham didn’t want a solo despite the many efforts of our choir director… They did find a compromise, though. Graham will be part of a quintet. Coming forward with a small group was much more his speed. This is his first time stepping out of the choir for a role. Maybe next year he’ll feel up to a solo. No worries if he doesn’t. We have tried not to pressure him (even though he is a great singer).

Soccer wrapped up last Tuesday! It was a great season and, thankfully, it didn’t rain at all when we were at the soccer fields. The last one looked like it might be wet, so I focused more on the potential for rain than on the temperature. Turns out it was a freezing and I should have dressed warmer… Okay, it wasn’t freezing, but it was 42 degrees and that felt like freezing to me! We celebrated with a round of Boo Buckets at McDonalds. The kids love collecting those things. Owen has plans of hoarding them until he is an adult and selling them. He is positive they will worth something someday. We’ll see…

Thursday, we helped Jeremy set up for Fall Fest, our church’s annual harvest event. It’s a warm and dry alternative to trick-or-treating on Halloween. It poured this year for Halloween, so I know an indoor event was appreciated by our community (and myself). The set-up was fun! The boys got to test everything out and enjoy the offerings before the crowds overtook the building the next day. They enjoyed the carnival style games, inflatable bounce houses, and sampling the candy for quality control.

On Friday, the Fall Fest highlights were the free snow cones, cotton candy, and meeting the Mariner Moose! We got the official Mariner Moose mascot to do a photo opportunity at our event! The theme was PNW (think forest, animals, Big Foot) and the moose fit right. Not to mention, the Mariners almost made it to the world series, so hype around the team is pretty high right now. For not being super sportsy, the boys had their hearts set on meeting the moose. Due to weather and traffic, the moose gave us quite the scare by being late. Thankfully, he stayed late and everyone who wanted a picture got one. Our family got multiple pictures with him. I’m sure it’s a memory the boys will take into adulthood.

Now it’s November! The weather looks like it and feels like it… The wind and rain have done a decent job of removing leaves from the trees. It looks like November outside. Now that the rain has settled in, I’m looking forward to more cozy time inside! This a great month for baking, reading, board games, puzzles, and visiting with family and friends around the table. I’m excited for all November has to offer! (Especially holiday red cup at Starbucks this Thursday!)

Sunriver Adventures 2025 October 13, 2025

Sunriver Resort (outside of Bend, OR) is one of favorite places to visit as a family. We have a blast every time we’re there. We never want to come home! Sunriver is definitely our happy place! We have visited in the spring and summer, but the best time to go (in our opinion) is the fall! The weather is still lovely and the quiet of off-season is nice, too! We just got back from a week of October adventuring in Sunriver. Here are the highlights!

We got into Bend on Monday and tried a new treat – Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream! It was so good! I loved my s’mores ice cream. Graham thought his cinnamon roll ice cream was great and Jeremy was pleased with his deep dish apple pie flavor. Only Owen didn’t love his treat… The kid is committed, heart and soul, to Tillamook Mint Chocolate Chip. For him, nothing compares! Oh well. Three out of four Scotts gave it two thumbs up! Once we got settled into our Wildflower condo, we walked across the street to the Village. Owen has been looking forward to getting a new Sunriver t-shirt and hoodie. Graham found a wolf t-shirt he loved. After we had our SWAG, we spent the rest of the evening at the Cove. The Cove is the resort aquatic center and it features two pools and two water slides. We spent hours at the Cove everyday! The kids are now going through Cove withdrawals!

Tuesday we explored the Newberry Caldera in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. We hiked around Paulina Falls. We climbed all over Big Obsidian Flow. We enjoyed a picnic lunch at East Lake and then went looking for hot springs in the lake. You know you’re inside a volcano when you smell sulfur and find bubbling water! After the caldera, we took off for the Oregon Observatory at Sunriver. We had tickets for a stargazing event on Thursday and the weather forecast didn’t look promising. We found out the observatory was flexible and we had a couple options. While we were there, the employee let us use their special telescopes to look at the sun! Not something you can do everyday! A solar flare had just occurred and everyone was excited! Owen was also thrilled to see a sunspot. The observatory is right beside the Sunriver Nature Center. We decided to check it out as well. The nature center is small, but their birds are beautiful! The boys loved Luna, the Eurasian-eagle owl, and Freya, the gyrfalcon. We wrapped up Tuesday with Cove time and telescope time behind the Lodge. The Harvest Moon was very impressive that evening!

Wednesday was Owen’s 12th birthday! We celebrated with all his favorite things! We grabbed doughnuts at the bakery across the street before renting bicycles for Jeremy and I. We spent the morning cycling around the golf course and river. Such a pretty ride! It’s one of my favorite places in Sunriver. We had Papa Murphy’s pizza and Safeway chocolate cake for lunch. We spent our afternoon bike riding and looking for geocaches around the resort. Jeremy made Owen a special steak dinner before we went for an even walk/ride. So much bike riding! Then it was a swim at the Cove! The skies clouded up so we decided not to switch our observatory tickets to Wednesday. It was a little disappointing not to stargaze on Owen’s birthday and we were concerned stargazing might not happen at all with the forecast. Owen was sad, but we went to cheer up by the fire pits behind the Lodge. Fire always improves moods! Overall, it was a great and active birthday!

Thursday, we visited The High Desert Museum. It has a fun mix of regional animals and history. The boys enjoyed getting to pet a turkey at the Settler’s Sawmill. They also loved watching the bobcat stare down a butterfly and they got up close to a peregrine falcon at the Birds of Prey encounter. Our afternoon was spent doing a walk/ride around the resort and then hitting the Cove after dinner. We had kept our Thursday stargazing tickets in hopes that the sky would clear and miraculously it did! It was such a God thing and answer to prayer! This event was Owen’s birthday present and we’d been looking forward to it for months. The event featured guided telescopes to see special sights in the night sky. Employees were around to explain what you were seeing. In the middle of the event, they moved everyone to look at constellations in another part of the facility so they can reposition the telescopes for another round of viewing. Owen was in his element and he had a blast conversing with the employees. No surprise, we were the last leave. We had a very happy 12 year old that evening!

Friday was our final day. We packed up and tidied our condo before heading out to the Cove. We were there just before they unlocked the doors! After our final hours of swimming, we took off for the long drive home. We made some many good memories on this trip! We love exploring the Bend area and we equally love hanging around the resort. There are so many options for fun and adventure! It was sweet to celebrate Owen’s birthday in a special place. He definitely enjoyed the birds, the biking, and the night sky! Truthfully, we all enjoyed it all! It was a trip for the record books!

Monday: Wildflower Condos, Sunriver SWAG, and the Cove
Tuesday Morning: Newberry Caldera – Paulina Falls, Big Obsidian Flow, and East Lake
Tuesday Afternoon: Sungazing at the Oregon Observatory at Sunriver and birds at the Sunriver Nature Center
Tuesday Night: Enjoying the Harvest Moon behind the Lodge
Wednesday: Owen’s Birthday! Bigfoot doughnut, biking around the resort, chocolate cake, and the Cove
Thursday: The High Desert Museum
Thursday Night: Stargazing at the Oregon Observatory at Sunriver
Friday: Final swim on the final day

September Sports and Adventures! September 18, 2025

I used to believe that September was a chill month where we’d fall back into our school year routine and everything settled down. Haha! It’s been years since I’ve held those false assumptions. Going back-to-school certainly does change our calendar, but September is not calm or quiet. Expectations and assumptions can be tricky little things. Now that I have more realistic understanding of September, I enjoy it so much more! Funny how that works.

We tried something new this September. We did a week of swimming lessons with our local homeschool sports group. It had been a few years since we’d done swimming lessons. Graham had just learned to swim when we stopped taking them and Owen loves to improve his strokes and diving techniques. We figured a little more practice and skill improvement couldn’t hurt. This was our first time doing swimming lessons with this group and it was a new location for us. The boys were nervous about the unknown, but once they got into the water, they were all smiles!

Since we aren’t apart of a co-op this year, we plan to lean into the offerings of our homeschool sports group. After a week of swimming, the boys kicked off soccer season this week. They’ll have six weeks at the soccer fields building skills, running out energy, and playing with friends. Graham even scored the first goal of the game on Tuesday! I’m grateful that this homeschool group allows us to experience team sports with a very manageable weekly commitment.

A few of our friends moved to a new co-op this year. While we aren’t able to join that group on a weekly basis, we’ve been invited to tagalong for field trips. Our first field trip with them was on Friday to the Oregon Zoo. This is one of our favorite places to visit and the group discount was amazing! Our boys enjoyed going around the zoo with friends. The weather was perfect and we saw so many of our favorite animals, including baby elephant, Tula-Tu! We made it to a keeper presentation for a South American porcupine that was also pretty neat. The zoo is always a wonderful field trip!

September is also hunting season. Jeremy and the boys have been out looking for elk to fill the freezer. The elk have been elusive this year, but the list of critters they come home seeing is pretty long. The highlight is all the different kinds of owls they’ve seen this month. Owen loves the hiking and the critters. He is very motivated by the idea of meat in the freezer. Graham enjoys the animals and time with family, but he is less interested in the hunting aspect. It’s a great nature walk and father/son bonding experience.

I’ve kept busy this month with school, the house, and coordinating the calendar. While the boys were out hunting on Saturday, I attended a women’s conference at our church. The worship and speaker were encouraging and it was nice be with other women (since I’m usually with the kids ministry). I attended a holiday themed workshop filled with tasty treats to sample. Yum! I led a crafting and conversations workshop in the afternoon. It was a good day. We also kicked off our Christmas musical practice on Sundays at church. I’m back to clicking through lyric slides and learning the music alongside the kids. It’s a fun season in children’s church!

As you can see, September is not a low-key month! But… at this moment, my menfolk are in the woods for the final hunt of the month. Rosie, the Roomba, is vacuuming my house. I have a few more steps to reach my daily goal. I hope to nibble on a slice of pumpkin bundt cake and start a new book. Not a bad way to spend a September evening, if you ask me. There are a few chill moments to be found in September!

That Fall Feeling! September 6, 2025

September is here and with it all the fall feels! This is my favorite time of year. The sights, sounds, and smells of fall just can’t be beat. I tried to wait to decorate the house until September, but I could hear the siren song coming from my autumn tote in the garage! I started with a gradual transition to fall in the house. Because we hosted a dinner with friends on August 30th, I simply switched some household items out for orange ones – orange throw pillows in the living room, an orange hand towel in the kitchen, a tissue box with orange highlights. I figured with no pumpkins in sight, this was an acceptable start to my fall decorating in August. Fall color was already outside my window, so it didn’t feel too early to bring it inside.

The next day, I pulled down my tote and got to work. Decorating for autumn this year is happening in stages. I don’t love the delay, but I’m trying to be patient. We added a new bookcase and fireplace to our living room last winter and now I have more places to spread seasonal cheer. Our current décor didn’t fill in the space as well as I had hoped. I was able to pick up a few more decorations at Hobby Lobby yesterday and I ordered my final pieces online. I’m hoping in the next week or so, I’ll have our living space settled. I can’t wait!

Decorating for fall is a huge part of my mental shift for the new school year. When my house feels like fall I transition back to school to better. It’s a visual cue that summer is over and with it the summer schedule. Time to get back to our school year routine! The boys started 4th and 6th grade on Tuesday. We are continuing to homeschool and our first week of school went well. If they can continue with this momentum, I see an excellent school year ahead of us!

We had our first field trip of the school year yesterday. Fort Vancouver has been on my field trip list for years and I was determined to make it happen this year. I’m glad I did, because it was such a fantastic outing. The boys were given clipboards to answer questions around the fort. Each building was set up authentically with staff in costume ready to explain how the space was used in the 1800’s. When the boys turned their clipboards in with the park ranger, they were awarded Junior Ranger badges. If you’ve been around this blog for a while, you know our family loves the National Park Junior Ranger program. We also got Graham’s 4th grade national parks pass through the Every Kid Outdoors program. We are ready for more national park adventures this year!

It’s a dark and stormy day here in our little corner of the PNW. I woke up to lightning and thunder. My hubby is out in the woods elk hunting at the moment. Now that the storms have moved through, I feel better about him being outdoors. The boys and I are enjoying some downtime and Owen hopes to head out with Jeremy this evening for his own nature walk with Jeremy. I enjoyed a tasty pumpkin spice doughnut from Krispy Kreme for breakfast and I may have a Costco pumpkin pie in my fridge. My obsession with pumpkin strong! My recent Scentsy order arrived yesterday with pumpkin, apple, cinnamon, and vanilla scented bars. Curating the fall feels involves all the senses. I’m here for it! All of it!

Our September schedule will be full this month. Back to school, a week of swim lessons, soccer kick-off, church commitments, adventures with friends, and appointments are filling the calendar. I used to think September would slow down with back to school, but I now realize we don’t “chill” until November when the rains move in. But no matter the pace, our home will be an autumn haven of good things! I’m embracing September and all the fall feels. Time cozy up with a good book and a slice of pie.

Bethel Staff Ping Pong Tournament: Jeremy made it to the final four. I participated, but was out right away. No shock there.
Triple Berry Crisp with homegrown raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Yum!
