Rocky Mountains Road Trip – Part 3 August 29, 2023

Day Seven – Canmore, AB to Cardston, AB
We woke to drizzly rain on our final day in Canmore. The original plan was to head to Calgary and hang out for a bit. We had hoped to do the Calgary Tower, which is slightly taller than our Seattle Space Needle. We thought we would see the sights of the city and surrounding area. But, the weather had other plans! The rain created a foggy, mist all the way to the ground. The city was socked in with drizzle. We decided to skip the Calgary Tower and head south to Waterton Lakes National Park. It wasn’t originally on our itinerary, but it was near our destination for the evening and the weather was better that direction. In Waterton Lakes, we found multiple red chairs, beautiful lake views, and Red Rock Canyon. At the start of the Red Rock Parkway, we saw a grizzly bear! Luckily, it was in the distance and seen safely from inside our car! We ended our time at Waterton Lakes National Park with a drive through their bison paddock. We had tacos for dinner in Cardston, did a little grocery shopping (we bought so much cereal on this trip), and then the boys spent the rest of the evening at the hotel pool. This hotel pool had a water slide, so that made it a huge hit!

Day Eight – Cardston, AB to Columbia Falls, MT
We had an early breakfast at A&W because it shared a parking lot with our hotel. After breakfast, we took off for the border crossing and back onto American soil. Our destination of the day was Glacier National Park. We had reservations to take the Going-To-The-Sun Road across the park. We stopped at the St. Mary’s Visitor Center to pick up Junior Ranger books and hit the road for this iconic drive. Our favorite spot was a hike down to Baring Falls. Our animal sighting of the day was a bighorn sheep grazing near the road. The St. Mary side of the park started out quiet, but as we drove on the park got busier. We couldn’t find parking at Logan Pass or the Trail of the Cedars. We were able to find parking at Red Rock Point and Lake McDonald. Outside of the Apgar Visitor Center we stopped for lunch and let the kids work on their Junior Ranger books. We turned the books into the rangers at the Visitor Center and the boys became official Junior Rangers of Glacier National Park. Crowds and bad road caused us to leave the park sooner than we expected. We went into Whitefish so the boys could run off some energy at a playground. We hit a Safeway for dinner supplies before heading to our house in Columbia Falls. Our house had a very steep descent to the Flathead River. We made it down to the river after dinner, but it was a bit treacherous. The boys took a wild life drive to end the day while I folded and repacked clean laundry.

Day Nine – Columbia Falls, MT to Spokane, WA
We took off early and left the Rocky Mountains behind us. We made it to Coeur d’Alene, ID in time for lunch. When in Coeur d’Alene, Meltz Extreme Grilled Cheese is a must. We shared our favorite local lunch spot with my family. Jeremy and I attend an annual conference in Coeur d’Alene so we thought it would be fun to show the boys where we stay when we travel to the area. We showed them the lake, boardwalk, a local playground, and took a walk through the Coeur d’Alene Resort lobby. Then it was Grandpa’s turn to give a tour. He took us into Spokane and gave the boys a tour of Gonzaga University, his alma mater. It was fun to see the campus and hear stories of where my dad lived and worked during college. The boys had a lot of fun each picking a souvenir from the huge Zag Shop. After the college tour, we checked into our final hotel and spent over an hour in the hotel pool. Dinner was Applebees across the street from our hotel.

Day Ten – Spokane, WA to Home
The final day! Our travel day home! We enjoyed breakfast the hotel. I had the fanciest hotel waffles ever. 3 mini waffles with blueberry batter and mixed berries and whip cream on top. Yum! We stopped at Starbucks for Jeremy to get a pumpkin spice latte and then hit the road for home! We made a quick Taco Bell stop in Yakima for lunch and then the we started the final leg of journey. We had a stretch break at Clear Creek Falls on White Pass and that sums up the highlights of this familiar territory. We made it home by mid-afternoon. It was nice to be back with enough time to unpack and make some headway on the laundry.

We are thankful to be home, but the kids will tell you they miss Canada and they wish the adventure had just kept on going. We are definitely raising explorers! Our family was so blessed by this opportunity to see some of the most stunning countryside in North America. We will never forget this experience!

Rocky Mountains Road Trip – Part 2 August 28, 2023

Let’s hit the road again as I continue to chronicle our expedition through the Rocky Mountains! Here’s the highlights from days four through six. If you missed the first three days of our adventure, you can catch up here.

Day Four – Kamloops B.C. to Canmore AB
Our day started with breakfast at Tim Hortons! Yum! I got a tasty apple fritter which might be my new favorite treat at Timmy’s. It was fun to introduce the kids to Canadian staple. We took off for the rugged Rocky Mountains on this leg of the journey. Outside of Golden B.C, we saw a moose from a distance. According to Jeremy, it was a bull, but I didn’t get a great look at it. We stopped at McDonalds for a second Squishmellow treat in Golden for lunch. This travel day with filled with scenic views and looming mountains. We saw a herd of bighorn sheep outside of Golden. We drove through Canada’s Glacier National Park and stopped at the Yoho National Park Visitor Centre. Because it was a big travel day, we made only one stop in Yoho – Takakkaw Falls. It was a beautiful waterfall and a scenic drive. Jeremy wanted to find the iconic red chairs at the falls for a photo opp. This inspired me to find quite a few more sets of red chairs along our journey. Parks Canada has over 200 sets of chairs set in scenic view points. It felt a bit like a scavenger hunt to find them. We crossed into Alberta and changed time zones to Mountain Time. Our final destination was our condo in Canmore A.B. Dinner was Pizza Hut directly under our condo and a quick to Safeway and Canadian Tire to end the day.

Day Five – Banff National Park, Icefields Parkway, Jasper National Park
We took a scenic drive up the Icefields Parkway which starts in Banff National Park and ends in Jasper National Park. The entire day took us about 12 hours in total. It takes about it’s about 6 hours of driving total and then add in all the stops along the way. We saw the Columbia Icefields, Sunwapta Falls, and Athabasca Falls. We had a picnic lunch at Mount Christie, where we found a set of red chairs. We walked a bit around Jasper Townsite. The kids loved seeing the trains in Jasper. The Icefields Parkway is known as one of the most beautiful drives in the world. Unfornately, we had some smoke haze so it wasn’t clear, blue skies. The mountains were still visible and certainly still impressive! Outside of Jasper Townsite, we also saw huge bull elk. It was the animal find of the day! After a full day of exploring the parks, we had a late dinner at a burrito shop in our condo building.

Day Six – Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, Banff Townsite, Bow Falls
Jeremy discovered that the only way to see Moraine Lake was to book shuttle tickets in advance. He was on right when they live to ensure we had this experience. We parked outside of Lake Louise and took the shuttle to Moraine Lake first. Such a beautiful turquoise lake! We did a short hike up a nearby rock hill to get an elevated view. Then we hiked a bit around the lakeshore. After poking around the lodge gift shop, we loaded up into the shuttle bound for Lake Louise. Yet another stunning lakeview awaited us. Lake Louise was much busier than Moraine Lake and our lunch supplies were back at the vehicles. We took a few pictures and then loaded up for lunch. We took the Bow Valley Parkway toward Banff Townsite. We stopped to have a picnic lunch along the parkway and to find another set of red chairs. We explored Banff Townsite, did a little souvenir shopping, and enjoyed a snack break at Tim Hortons. We took a short drive across the Bow River to see Bow Falls before heading back to Canmore for dinner. We selected A&W, another Canadian staple. We reserved the roof top hot tub at the condo with 360 views of the valley to end the day.

Rocky Mountains Road Trip August 27, 2023

We just wrapped up our final adventure of the summer. We certainly saved the biggest and longest summer experience for last. We just completed a 10 day road trip through the Canadian Rocky Mountains into Glacier National Park and then home. We saw some beautiful countryside, awesome animals, and we marveled at God’s creation. It’s a trip we won’t soon forget. We caravanned with my parents and sister, so it was fun to experience these locations alongside them. I could easily turn this into a multi-post blog series with what we did day to day, but I’m going to attempt to be brief and share the daily highlights! I’ll do my best to narrow down which pictures to share as well! This is going to tough!

Day One – Leaving home and heading to Vancouver B.C.
We took off in the morning with hopes of getting to the Vancouver B.C. area in the afternoon. My parents and sister were leaving later than us, so this day felt like it was just our family since the rest of the family didn’t arrive until after bedtime. Our first stop once we crossed the border was Stevenson Village where they filmed Once Upon a Time. We’ve visited this area many times before and it’s a favorite of ours. We got treats at our favorite Waves Coffeehouse. Jeremy loves getting all things maple while in Canada and I had a Nanaimo bar. Yum! We checked into our house in Burnaby and took off for Metropolis at Metrotown. This huge four story mall was the best place to have dinner. Jeremy got his first poutine of the trip. The boys were thrilled to see Toys’R’Us thriving in Canada. I took the kiddos into Indigo which is like a Canadian version of Barnes & Noble. Our last stop of The Real Canadian Superstore for groceries.

Day Two – Vancouver B.C.
We went to Granville Island first thing in the morning. We bought treats and watched the pigeons on the pier before walking through all the shops of this public market. We had lunch at our favorite fish shack – Go Fish. Their salmon fish and chips are amazing! After lunch, we went to Stanley Park and took in a few of the sights. We stopped at the totem poles, Brockton Lighthouse, and Prospect Point. Then it was off to Costco in Burnaby to find dinner and look around. Our family loves to visit any Costco we can while traveling. It’s an odd quirk of ours. We made dinner at the house and settled in for a chill evening.

Day Three – Vancouver B.C. to Kamloops B.C.
We said good-bye to the Vancouver area and took off for Kamloops. This travel day got us halfway to our main destination. Just a pit stop along the way. We got into Kamloops at lunch time and discovered that Squishmellows are currently the Happy Meal toys in Canada. The boys and Auntie April love Squishmellows so this was a big discovery. We went to Costco after lunch, because why not?! Actually, Jeremy saw some shoes at the first Costco and decided he wanted to see if he could find them in Kamloops. He did! It’s always nice to find hiking shoes at Costco prices. The air quality was not great in Kamloops so my parents and sister ran indoor errands while Jeremy and I took the boys to the BC Wildlife Park. We were warned the smoke might make the animals difficult to find, but in the end we saw all of them except the bobcat. Not too shabby! They have so many neat animals there. A few of our favorites were the spirit bear, grizzly bears, artic wolves, foxes, and the variety of owls. We met back up with my parents and sister for dinner and then we went off to explore Canadian Tire – another favorite Canadian store of ours.

Summer Camp 2023 August 13, 2023

Wow, we’re almost halfway through August! Sorry I went radio silent there. August has been a different month. After two months of hosting all the playdates and pool parties, we hunkered down at home the first week of August as a rest/prepare week. Even though we had no company or out of the house plans, it was a hugely productive week. Jeremy was prepping for directing a full 7 days of kids camp and I got all the prep work for the school year done. I’ve filed our intent to homeschool with the school district, officially planned the 1st quarter of school, and printed our first day of school signs. I am as ready as possible to start the school year at the end of the month. Woo hoo!

Last Sunday, Jeremy took off for kids camp. He directed two camps in one week. Camp One was Sunday through Wednesday and Camp Two was Wednesday through Saturday. Our church joined Camp Two, so I had a few days of single “momming” at the start of the week before joining Jeremy at camp. I had my permanent crown placed last Monday which means I’m done with my summer of dental appointments. Praise the Lord!

Owen went to camp last year while Graham and I stayed home. Graham wasn’t old enough to be a camper and we wanted Owen to be all-in on the camp experience (and not feel torn between family nearby). It was a great experience for Owen, but a hard experience for Graham. He missed Owen terribly. As the director’s family, we get the option of tagging along at camp and we decided to take it this year. Graham slept on an air mattress in Jeremy and I’s cabin while Owen bunked with our church boys. Next year, Graham will be old enough for the full camp experience. For his first camp experience, Graham got to choose when he wanted to participate and when he wanted to chill out at our cabin. We’ll see how he handles the full schedule next year. One of the highlights of camp was going with the cousin. Two of my nephews joined the fun and we’re hoping for even more cousins next year. The kids would tell you that cousin time, the lake, and the snack shack were their favorite parts. Owen took the chapel messages to heart and we had some good conversations as he processed what God was doing in his life. It was fun to watch the kids enjoy all that camp had to offer.

To raise money for a missionary family, the kids got to turn Pastor Jeremy into a human dog. What does that mean? The leaders sprayed condiments of ketchup, mustard, and relish and then the kids stuck hot dog buns on to Jeremy. He was a good sport about it all… but what a mess! The stinky “hot dog” laundry is washing as I type. It was the last load to run… I put it off for obvious reasons. We are unpacked and ready to rest!

One more highlight, Graham lost his first top tooth last night. It was wiggling before we left for camp. A few foods made it bleed and that freaked Graham out. He doesn’t do well with blood. At camp, Graham was super concerned about what foods might bother his tooth. I’m glad it’s out now so he can eat whatever he wants again. Done with the drama!

That about covers this mid-August update. We are enjoying these last few weeks of summer vacation before the school routine starts up again. School is almost here, but we have one last hurrah planned before we settle down. I’ll keep you posted!

Zipping Through Summer July 30, 2023

We are two-thirds through Summer 2023 and it’s zipping by! It’s crazy to think that we are less than a month away from the start of school. We have plenty of adventures between now and then so school oddly feels like a lifetime away and right around the corner. Very mixed feelings here!

For now, let’s focus on wrapping up July. It’s been a fun filled month! Each week has had it’s own unique set of adventures. After my last post, we visited the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. Our local library gives out free zoo tickets with their summer reading program. My whole motivation for doing the reading program is for my kiddos to get those free tickets. Graham enjoyed the big cats – the tiger and the clouded leopard. Owen loved the budgies and puffins.

Last week was another dentist appointment for me. I had my crown prep and temporary crown placed. While I spent hours hanging with the dentist, the boys had piano lessons and adventures with Nana & Papa. The kids definitely had more fun than me that day… but I’m one appointment away from being completely done with these dental shenanigans. I’m grateful that there is a light at the of the tunnel.

Hosting has been a big part of our summer schedule. We love having friends over to play in the yard, run through the woods, or swim in the pool. We’ve done our best to be the summer party place and I feel like we’ve succeeded. This week we hosted a playdate, a co-op planning meeting, and a family dinner with friends. The co-op planning meeting was kind of a big deal for me. We had 26 people over and that is our largest group since the pandemic. We kept the party outside and entertained the kiddos with yard activities. The co-op moms were able to sit down for a few hours and plan out the whole next school year. It was a super productive meeting! I’m really excited for this coming year at co-op!

Our big outing for this week was a visit to Mt. Rainier on Friday. Jeremy is adamant we must visit Mt. Rainier every summer. It’s not truly summer unless we spend a day at the mountain. Last year’s mountain mission was mountain goats (and we found them). This year we were on the lookout for marmots and we succeeded in our mission! The kids got so close to one marmot they could have petted it. We saw lots of marmots including baby marmots. We also saw ptarmigans with chicks. The boys love seeing new creatures and identifying animals. While the hiking was beautiful and the animal enjoyable, I appreciated our stop at the Paradise Inn for treats and a rest. We talked about how neat it would be to stay there someday. Just another spot on my travel bucket list.

Sunriver Summer Vacation July 19, 2023

Last week, we were blessed to take a vacation to Sunriver, OR with Jeremy’s parents and his brother’s family. If you recall, we took a trip to Sunriver this last October. While it might seem odd to take a vacation to same place within year’s time, we jumped at the chance to go when it was a suggested destination. We love Sunriver!!! We’ve visited it now in many variations and we’ve loved them all. We’ve been with my parents in the spring, just our family in the fall, and now with Jeremy’s family in the summer. The only season we haven’t visited in is winter. It’s my new life goal to make that happen. Bring on the Sunriver snow! Someday!

Sunriver is one of our happy places. There is so much to love about the location. Forgive me while I gush! The biking trails around the resort are awesome. I got up early most days to have some quiet, walking time to start the day. Each walk was beautiful! We also rode bikes around the area and did a little geo-caching. The Cove is the aquatic center for the resort. It has two pools, two hot tubs, and two water slides. We were there everyday and it’s probably the boys’ favorite part of the resort. Around the house, we enjoyed yummy meals, played games (card games, board games, Switch games), and I found plenty of moments to sneak away with a book.

We went on a few outings outside of the resort. We visited the Lava River Cave and made it all the way to the end. This was a site the kids wanted to visit in October, but it had already closed for the season. They were so excited for the chance to hike in the underground cave. The experience was similar to ones we’ve at the Ape Caves here in WA. Our boys love adventuring, especially in caves. We also visited the High Desert Museum. It’s a combination museum and small zoo. They had a super interactive gray fox and a playful group of river otters. They were the highlight of the visit. We also enjoyed their birds of prey exhibit. After wandering the museum, we did mini-golf and an arcade at a local fun center.

After checking out on Saturday, we were still able to hit the pool for a couple of hours before hitting the road for home. The kids were so bummed to leave. It was truly a fantastic trip. Good times with family and plenty of awesome activities! It was hard to say good-bye. But like I said, I’m hopeful we’ll be back again!

Now that we’re back home, it’s still pool time everyday in our backyard pool. It’s not quite a cool as the resort aquatic center, but it gets the job done. We’ve hosted two pool playdates this week with another one planned for tomorrow. We love sharing our pool with friends. It’s supposed to be 90 today, so I’m pretty positive I’ll be reading poolside today while the boys have a splashing good time.

I’m cherishing these sunny, swimmy, summer memories. Each week flies by with it’s own set of adventures. Oh! Graham mastered the art of swimming while we were away. He took off like a little fish in the deep end and surprised us all. We decided that with this new development, we don’t need another around of swimming lessons this summer. We love our local pool and swimming lessons were a big hit in June. They also fill up the calendar and make for longer days. We’re all okay with the extra margin in our days, especially now that Graham is swimming like a champ. It’s a joy to watch the kiddos reach these milestone moments!

July Happenings July 9, 2023

We are one week into July and what a week it’s been!

We kicked off July with a birthday celebration for my father. He donned his chef’s hat (figuratively, not literally) and made a turkey on his Traeger for his birthday meal. It was super tasty and a special treat to have a holiday meal in July!

For the 4th of July, my forever friend, Maggie, and her family came to spend the day with us. The kids splashed in the pool and ran around the yard most of the day. The adults played board games and supervised the shenanigans. We enjoyed some BBQ and lots of goodies. We ended the night with a few fireworks.

On my dad’s actual birthday, the boys and I joined my parents for a breakfast out that morning. I had cinnamon roll pancakes that were both beautiful and yummy! The boys and I enjoyed being a part of Grandpa’s birthday celebration. And it was a good distraction from my afternoon plans…

Life is made of highs and lows and it’s certainly easier to blog about the highs and skip the lows… But a big part of my week revolved around getting a root canal on Wednesday afternoon. At my dental check-up in June, my dentist was concerned I might have resorption happening in one tooth. I was sent to the endodontist and it was confirmed. Thankfully, the root canal went quickly and after the numbness wore off, I’ve felt fine. Now I have two more dental appointments ahead so I can get a crown. Five dental appointments mixed into my plans isn’t really how I wanted to spend my summer, but teeth are important and I want to keep mine so… yay adulting!

Okay, back to the highlights! Yesterday was Jeremy and I’s 17th wedding anniversary! Woo hoo! My in-laws watched our boys so we could have a date day. We hit Costco and Target, which is always a special occasion without kids. We ate out and then Jeremy very kindly took me to see The Little Mermaid. We were the only ones in the theater so we were able to makes comments throughout the movie without annoying anyone. It was a fun day and I’m always grateful for the time we get to spend together. I love our family adventures, but kid-free time is appreciated!

Our Sundays in July are extra fun at church. We run our VBA (Vacation Bible Adventure) program as a part of our Sunday morning curriculum. The boys are having a blast at our Stellar Sundays. The new songs, theme, crafts, and snacks have been a hit. We also have a swing chair ride and inflatables up in the parking lot between church gatherings. It certainly makes Sunday mornings feel like a party.

Well, that’s just week one of July! We are always looking forward to the next adventure, just around the corner!

The June Wrap-Up! June 29, 2023

June is coming to a close and what a month it’s been! Way busier than I expected, but so much fun! If you recall my last post, we’ve had lots to celebrate in June. We had our final June celebration was this last weekend and it was a pretty big deal! My dear, sweet Grandma (or GG as the next generation calls her), turned 90 on Tuesday. We had a family gathering on Saturday to mark the occasion. My grandma is a special lady! I get my sweet tooth from her. I have so many childhood memories of family vacations and visits with her. Now I love chatting on the phone with her, knowing she’s praying over my family, and watching my boys play with the same toys I did at her house. She is quick to listen, encourage, and pray. What a blessing to celebrate this milestone birthday with her!

June has been filled with all kinds of good summer things. Since my last post, we’ve had another pool play date. We love opening our home to swim. I enjoy sitting on the deck in the shade watching the kids splash about. It’s even better with friends! We had a family dinner with friends and broke in their new bocce ball set. I forgot to snap pictures, but I tweaked my chocolate chip cookie recipe and found a way to keep them soft and chewy. I changed the brown sugar to white sugar ratio and baked them for a minute less than the directions said. I also tried keeping a slice of bread in an air tight container with the cookies and it worked! Hooray for baking victories! Other recent baking projects have include brownies and cinnamon rolls… I’m thinking tomorrow might be another baking day. I love rotating through treats. I’m the type of person who always has some kind of dessert around the house.

The boys wrapped up two weeks of swimming lessons today. They didn’t pass their levels, but we expected that. The progress they’ve made this session definitely shows. They both worked so hard! This summer was the most excited they’ve been for swim lessons. They couldn’t wait to get the pool each day. They are super sad lessons are now over. I, on the hand, am rejoicing. I’m thankful for a break in the pace. We’ll probably do another session this summer, just not the next session. The boys have our home pool to keep practicing in. The forecast for the next week looks hot, so I’m sure I’ll still be poolside, just in the comfort of my own backyard.

Well, that’s the June wrap-up! July is right around the corner with it’s own set of new adventures! Until next time…

Quite a few of our floaties have popped over the last year, so it was time to add a new one into the mx. Surprisingly, this popsicle easily holds three kids or one surfing child. And it has confetti on the inside. What’s not to love?

The Many Celebrations of June! June 20, 2023

It seems like we’re jumping from celebration to celebration on our family calendar! Lots of big reasons to celebrate this month. At the beginning of the month was my nephew’s birthday. The following week, we celebrated my in-laws anniversary and retirement. Since we had the Scott clan gathered for a retirement party, we also added my brother-in-law’s 40th birthday, an uncle’s birthday, and Father’s Day into the mix. With celebrating 5 occasions on one day, I felt like throwing confetti all day long and wishing everyone I passed a “happy celebration day!”

We sandwiched the big Scott shindig with some birthday fun. We celebrated my mom turning 60 with a family meal on Saturday and a waffle brunch on Monday (her actual birthday). After all that partying, we took a Father’s Day trip to the Oregon Coast and celebrated Jeremy and my dad on Father’s Day with a meal. Wow! That’s a lot of parties! We also mailed off multiple graduation cards this month. Also, the June party vibes aren’t quite finished yet, but I’ll save that for a future update!

In non-party news, the boys started swim lessons yesterday. The process changed from in-person registration (where Jeremy would wait in a long line that formed before 6:00am) to online. The online format had me nervous because I could only register one kid at a time. I wondered if Kid 2 would lose their class space because I was registering Kid 1. Luckily, we got the classes we hoped for. It was also nice to register the boys while we were out of town at the beach. The boys have done great with their swim skills these first two days. I can tell they’ve been practicing. Graham, especially, has much more confidence this summer. Yesterday was a wet lesson and today was a cold one. Thankfully, the forecast looks better for the rest of the lessons ahead. June weather is a bit unpredictable around here.

As you can imagine, I have lots of pictures to share. I could use a lot of words to highlight each of events above, but I’m going with the “a picture is worth a thousand words” concept today. Enjoy!

Getting Outside June 8, 2023

We’ve had a stretch of delightful weather here in the PNW and we’ve been loving the outside time that affords. If you ever find it odd how often I comment when we have nice weather, please realize that in Washington state we sometimes have June-uary, where June feels like January. We never take sunny days for granted because they can be rare, even as we near the start of summer. What kind of outside fun have we been having? I’m glad you asked!

Last Thursday kicked off the month of June and it was the start of our local library’s summer reading program. As a special treat, we went into the library. (We almost always use the drive-thru window). The boys selected their free books and received a new library tote bag and free tickets to our local fair. They get another free book and more rewards when they complete the reading program. Of course, all the books we came home with from the library were about birds. We have a serious case of bird brain in this household. Being a bird nerd takes research!

Friday, we took a walk to the beaver dam behind our house. Jeremy recently downloaded a bird ID app based on the bird’s song. We have quite a few forest birds that we hear, but never see. Owen hoped that by walking into the woods, we would spot a few of these elusive birds, but sadly, we did not. It was still a lovely walk, though. The trail was green and smelled of wildflowers. We saw plenty of signs from our active beaver neighbors.

On Saturday, we observed one of the deer in our yard might be pregnant. I was watching her around 2:00pm and wondering about her behavior. Around 5:00pm, Graham yelled that there was a baby deer in the yard. It took a little searching, but we discovered the new baby, only a few hours old. The boys have taken to calling the mama deer, Rosie, and the baby deer, Fern. We now spot Rosie and Fern daily and we all gush over Fern’s cuteness.

We attended a soccer birthday party on Sunday for one of the cousins. The kids had a blast playing a game of soccer – kids vs. adults. According to the kids, they won. I’m guessing that’s true since it was a mob of kids out there. They were a force to be reckoned with. Unfortunately, Owen and Jeremy’s allergies were stirred up by the wind and the grasses. It’s definitely allergy season and one of the few “cons” to going outside right now.

The boys have opted to be in the pool most afternoons. We had a pool playdate earlier this week. I love chatting with a friend while the kids splash around. We have another playdate this afternoon and we are excited! Swimming is an excellent way to wear out rambunctious boys. It’s a joy to watch them float through their summer afternoons. Because we are hosting multiple playdates this week, I made “cool” treats to share with our friends. I love making ice cream cone and popsicle shaped cookies. They are surprisingly easy to decorate and they are so adorable! I enjoy picking the colors and giving them a summertime feel.

That’s the update from our neck of the woods. These are good days to get outside, enjoy nature, and make a splash! (Also, to eat cookies… and read books!)
