Bookish Thoughts for August
I did it! I finished the Harry Potter canon this month! Celebrate with me! If I wanted extra bonus points with my boys, I should have continued on and read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child… but my Kindle Unlimited TBR was calling to me. Calling so loudly! I enjoyed my summer with Harry, but we had spent a lot of time together. I was ready to move on and mix things up. I ended up with more Harry thanks to our road trip to Montana and then our drive out to the coast. I’ve now re-listened to much of books 5-7 again with my family. It was a fun experience to have our whole family go through these books at the same time. We’ve never all read the same thing at the same time. It was a very unique and bonding opportunity. I’ll remember our Harry Potter summer quite fondly! And the soundtrack of all our summer travels will always be Harry in my mind.
I enjoyed a few library holds before diving into my KU TBR. I really liked the new releases from Roseanna M. White and Pepper Basham. I’m currently reading through the Falling for Autumn series on Kindle Unlimited. I love multi-author series and I’m digging the fall feels. By the end of August, I am ready to embrace all things autumn, including my reading vibes. I’ll be honest, autumn books are a favorite of mine year-round. I also love Christmas books year-round and summer books… I love seasonal reading, but in any season! I’ve been stocking up on all the KU new releases. It’s been nice to dive into new stories again.
I gave non-fiction a break over the summer. Shocking, right? I do love non-fiction, but nothing holds my heart quite like a novel. I wasn’t really in the right headspace for non-fiction with all our travels this summer. Now that we’re home and settling back into our school-year routine, I’ve picked up the non-fiction again. I just started What Grows in Weary Lands: On Christian Resilience by Tish Harrison Warren. I also grabbed a copy of The 6 Types of Working Genius by Patrick Lencioni. Jeremy mentioned that concepts in the book will be briefly integrated into our annual staff retreat. I wanted to look over a copy so I could be on the same page as the team. In September, I plan to start 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos by Jordan B. Peterson. Lots on non-fiction on the horizon! It might be a bit too ambitious with school just starting and all the fall commitments looming… But I like to challenge myself and what better way to challenge myself than with books?
